International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12th every year to honor and appreciate the contributions of nurses to healthcare and society. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing. Nurses play a vital role in providing care and ensuring the well-being of patients. They work in various settings, such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and community health centers. International Nurses Day is an opportunity to thank and acknowledge the hard work, dedication, and compassion of these healthcare professionals.
The Origin of International Nurses Day
Florence Nightingale was a British nurse. During the Crimean War (1854-1856), she headed a group of nurses that cared for injured British soldiers. She spent many hours in the wards, and her night rounds giving personal care to the wounded established her image as the “Lady with the Lamp.” She established the hospital administrator system, improved the quality of nursing, resulting in a rapid decline in the death rate of the sick and wounded. After Nightingale’s death in 1910, the International Council of Nurses, in honor of Nightingale’s contributions to nursing, designated May 12, her birthday, as “International Nurses Day”, also known as “Nightingale Day” in 1912.
