(A to C) BALB/c mice were immunized twice, 3 weeks apart, with alum-adjuvanted gp120 ICs (ICs-alum) generated with serum Abs from four neutralizers (N) or four non-neutralizers (NN) (n = 5 to 8 mice per group, two experiments). Control groups received alum-adjuvanted gp120 or adjuvant alone. Ten days after the last immunization, we measured the titers of gp120-specific IgG Abs (A), the titers of high-avidity gp120-specific IgG Abs (B) in sera, and the percentage of GC B cells (C), defined as live CD3−CD19+CD38−CD95+ cells, in draining lymph nodes of immune mice. All assays were run in duplicate, and a Mann-Whitney test was used to compare responses induced by neutralizer (N) or non-neutralizer (NN) immunized animals. *P < 0.05 and **P < 0.01. Although similar effects on apoptotic cell death, ROS generation, tissue pH and infarct size were observed, exploration of the MAPK pathway revealed that there may be differences in the upstream effects of mechanical postconditioning and hydrogen rich saline with lactic acid. BACKGROUND: Humidity control measures in the home environment of patients with asthma have been recommended, however there is no consensus about the usefulness of these measures. OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of dehumidification of the home environment on asthma control. SEARCH STRATEGY: A search of the clinical trials registers of the Cochrane Collaboration and Cochrane Airways Group using search terms for asthma and [humid* OR water vapour OR water vapor* OR water-vapour* OR water-vapor*]. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials on the use of humidity control measures in the home environment of patients with asthma were evaluated for inclusion. Only one trial could be included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Data was extracted using a predesigned data extraction form. No data was available for entering into RevMan for analysis. MAIN RESULTS: The included trial using mechanical ventilation with or without high efficiency vacuum cleaners did not show any clinical benefit to asthma patients. There was a decline in the house dust mite count and the antigen level. This open trial had a low sample size. REVIEWER’S CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for studying the health benefits of dehumidification by a double blind randomized controlled trial with adequate sample size measuring clinical outcomes in patients of asthma.
